Phase 3.4 Complete - QwenBatchScheduler Implementation

Date: 2026-09-03
Status: ✅ Complete
Branch: master @ e59d5d3

📋 Summary

Phase 3.4 successfully implements a C++ batch scheduler for cpp_engine, enabling continuous batching capability for PocketLLM's native backend. This closes the critical scheduling gap between PocketLLM and vLLM/SGLang.

🎯 Deliverables

1. Core C++ Implementation ✅

Files Created: - cpp_engine/include/qwen_batch_scheduler.hpp - Scheduler interface (151 lines) - cpp_engine/engine/qwen_batch_scheduler.cpp - Scheduler implementation (397 lines)

Key Classes:

class QwenBatchScheduler {
    uint64_t submit_request(prompt_tokens, sampling, callback);
    bool cancel_request(request_id);
    bool poll_result(request_id, result*, timeout_ms);
    Stats get_stats();
    void stop();
private:
    void schedule_loop();  // Background thread
    void admit_requests();
    void run_prefill_batch();
    void run_decode_batch();
    void handle_completions();
};

Features: - Background scheduling thread with FCFS admission - Thread-safe request submission and cancellation - Callback-based and polling-based result retrieval - Separate prefill/decode batch handling - Automatic slot allocation and cleanup - Request timing metrics (TTFT, total time)

2. Python Bindings ✅

Exposed Types: - QwenBatchScheduler - Main scheduler class - QwenBatchSamplingParams - Sampling parameters - SchedulerGenerationResult - Generation result - QwenBatchSchedulerStats - Scheduler statistics

API Validation:

$ python3 tests/test_cpp_backend_batching.py
 QwenBatchScheduler available
 QwenBatchSamplingParams available
 SchedulerGenerationResult available
 QwenBatchSchedulerStats available

3. CppBackend Integration ✅

File Modified: - pocketllm/backends/cpp_backend.py (+137 lines)

Key Changes: - _init_batch_scheduler() - Initialize scheduler on demand - _generate_batched() - Batch mode generation path - _generate_serial() - Legacy serial path (preserved) - capabilities.supports_batch - Dynamically set based on scheduler availability

Configuration:

args = EngineArgs(
    model="/path/to/checkpoint",
    backend="cpp",
    backend_options={
        "enable_batching": True, # Enable batch scheduler
        "max_batch_size": 8,           # Max concurrent requests
    }
)

Backward Compatibility: - enable_batching=False (default) → Serial execution (no change) - enable_batching=True → Batch scheduler mode (opt-in)

4. Testing ✅

Files Created: - cpp_engine/tests/test_qwen_batch_scheduler.cpp - C++ unit test - tests/test_cpp_backend_batching.py - Python integration test

Test Results:

# C++ API validation
$ ./tests/test_qwen_batch_scheduler
API validation PASSED

# Python API validation
$ python3 tests/test_cpp_backend_batching.py
 All APIs available
API validation completed

Remaining Tests: - Full end-to-end test with real checkpoint (requires Qwen3.5 model) - Concurrent request throughput benchmark - Performance regression validation

🏗️ Architecture

Request Flow (Batch Mode)

Python API
CppBackend._generate_batched()
QwenBatchScheduler.submit_request()
[Background Thread]
  → admit_requests()       # Allocate slots
  → run_prefill_batch()    # Call engine->batch_prefill()
  → run_decode_batch()     # Call engine->batch_decode_step()
  → handle_completions()   # Free slots, notify results
CppBackend.poll_result()
GenerationResult

Scheduler Thread Loop

while (running_) {
    admit_requests();        // Move waiting → running
    run_prefill_batch();     // Prefill new requests
    run_decode_batch();      // Decode active requests
    handle_completions();    // Cleanup finished requests
    sleep(1ms);              // Avoid busy loop
}

Slot Management

slot_to_request_: map<int, SchedulerRequest*>
[Slot 0] → Request A (prefill)
[Slot 1] → Request B (decode, seq_len=5)
[Slot 2] → Request C (decode, seq_len=12)
[Slot 3] → (free)

⚙️ Configuration Options

Option Default Description
enable_batching False Enable batch scheduler (opt-in)
max_batch_size 8 Max concurrent requests
timeout_ms 60000 Per-request timeout (poll)

Example:

from pocketllm import EngineArgs, LLM, SamplingParams

# Enable batching
llm = LLM(EngineArgs(
    model="/path/to/qwen3.5",
    backend="cpp",
    backend_options={
        "enable_batching": True,
        "max_batch_size": 4,
    }
))

# Single request (works in both modes)
result = llm.generate(
    prompt_tokens=[1, 2, 3],
    sampling_params=SamplingParams(max_tokens=100)
)

📈 Expected Performance (To Be Validated)

Based on Phase 3.⅔.3 kernel capabilities:

Concurrency Expected Throughput Status
1 request ≤1.05× baseline Need to verify
2 concurrent ≥1.7× baseline Need to verify
4 concurrent ≥3.0× baseline Need to verify
8 concurrent ≥4.5× baseline Need to verify

Next Steps for Validation: 1. Run with real Qwen3.5 checkpoint 2. Benchmark single-request latency (ensure ≤1.05× regression) 3. Benchmark concurrent throughput (2/4/8 requests) 4. Compare with vLLM on same hardware

🔧 Build Instructions

cd cpp_engine/build

# Reconfigure with Python bindings
cmake .. -DPOCKET_BACKEND=cuda \
         -DPOCKET_BUILD_PYTHON=ON \
         -Dpybind11_DIR=/path/to/pybind11/share/cmake/pybind11

# Build
make -j8

# Verify module
python3 -c "import sys; \
    sys.path.insert(0, 'python'); \
    import pocketllm_cpp; \
    print('QwenBatchScheduler' in dir(pocketllm_cpp))"

🐛 Known Limitations

  1. Prefill is Serial: batch_prefill() currently processes requests sequentially (Phase 3.2 limitation). True parallel prefill requires mixed-length batching implementation.

  2. No Preemption: Current scheduler uses simple FCFS without preemption. Long prefills can block short decode requests.

  3. No Prefix Matching: Unlike SGLang's RadixCache, the scheduler does not automatically share prefixes across requests. Prefix caching remains per-slot only.

  4. Fixed Timeout: poll_result() uses a fixed timeout. No support for indefinite wait or async/await patterns yet.

  5. No Request Migration: Requests cannot be moved between batches or rescheduled.
